Game Design

Introduction to Coding

Games are the top downloaded apps worldwide. This yearlong course teaches young students how to program on a computer using game projects kids love. Students learn the basics of computer logic, functions, variables, and loops while their game characters fight enemies, upgrade their armory, and vanquish evil. By the end of this 2-semester course, students will be able to design levels, create new heroes, and publish their own game to the app store of their choice. This course uses free educational licensed software called Unity and is a prerequisite for future Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality courses.

Game Development (intermediate coding)

In this second year Video Game Development course, we will build on what we learned in the first year by designing and creating a game of our own. Along with Unity, students will learn Blender 3D, an open source, 3-dimensional rendering software. With Blender, we will build models, animate and rig our characters, and add background objects to create rich and interactive scenes. We will then put everything into Unity and use computer code to control the game play. Upon completion of this course, students may be ready to take the Unity Certified Developer Exam, an important first step towards a career in games.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of previous coding course with Kumu Keahi.
